WOSCAP participates in policy seminar and meets experts from the European External Action Service

On 25 October 2016, WOSCAP spoke at the EU-CIVCAP "Research Meets Policy Seminar" on the EU's Comprehensive Approach and the new strategic framework on Security Sector Reform at the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (EPLO) in Brussels.

The aim of this seminar was to engage policy-makers, practitioners and researchers in discussions in order to identify research gaps and to strengthen the research-policy-practice nexus. The seminar involved speakers from research institutions such as the Vesalius College and the Bristol University, from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Commission DG Development and Cooperation (DEVCO). During the seminar valuable insights were shared and future priorities for European Union's Horizon 2020 (H2020) were discussed.

The project "Preventing and Responding to Conflict: Developing Civilian Capabilities for a Sustainable Peace" (EU-CIVCAP) is also sponsored by the H2020 and thus collaboration and exchange is much appreciated.

On 26 October 2016, GPPAC, the project coordinator of WOSCAP, met with different experts from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Commission DG Development and Cooperation (DEVCO) to exchange on research conducted in the field of Security Sector Reform and to discuss about other findings from the WOSCAP project.

Thereby, GPPAC engaged with

1) CSDP Lessons Learned Unit (EEAS);
2) Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC/EEAS);
3) CSDP Coordination and Support Unit (EEAS);
4) The Crisis Management and Planning Directorate (CMPD/EEAS) and
5) Unit B7 – Fragility and Resilience at DEVCO.

Some of the key discussion points were: on challenges and best practices of joint pre-deployment trainings and the development of and follow up on Lessons Learned; on challenges and best practices of civil-military cooperation; on the value of conflict sensitivity workshops and the understanding of the EU's Integrated Approach.

These meetings were very valuable in the sense of exchanging ideas and insights and paving the path for developing policy recommendations in order to enhance the EU's conflict peacebuilding structures.
